Frum Outdoorsman: Rare but Possible

The wanderings and adventures of an orthodox Jew

I love Monsey!!!

Posted by Frum Hiker on May 6, 2008

Where else could I leave work at 5:45 be on my bike at 6:05 ride 15 miles on roads past lakes and through dense forests and then kayak for 2 hours.

In fact I kayaked last night on these three connecting lakes in Harriman State park- about 13 miles from my house, it was getting dark by the time I got on my kayak and I brought a head lamp with me- I went in these tunnels underneath roads and some bats flew out, I kayaked until it was dark sky out and switched on my lamp- didn’t even need it besides to see the fishermen who like fishing at night.

Monsey Rocks!!! I could never be this active outside in Albany- everything was too far

Wow. I really should start finding my camping gear, even if I don’t put it in my car yet (lighter car = better gas mileage). I have a vague idea where my head lamp is. I love my head lamp. It rocks. 🙂

Thats right baby- get your butt up here and become my6 tree hugging partner in crime.

The bugs are out in full force by the way- so camping may get a little rough- but I am def game and its 15 minutes from my house.

(shut up — I was looking at two-seater kayaks yesterday) The commute is currently way prohibitive. I have enough trouble getting to work on time from Long Beach. (Long Island is bizarre. There are no mountains. If I didn’t love my family and care about having health insurance, I’d totally be in Teaneck (my friend offered me free rent again last night) or someplace closer. If we ever meet up down there, my friend will feed you. Her brisket is like candy.

What’s rough if I have bug spray, maybe a citronella candle and my tent zippers work? Lack of endurance on my my part is embarrassing, but I’m sure in a few months, I’ll be fine. Things have just been so busy lately. I’m getting my priorities in order. Playing outside is one of them.

I just had a thought for a JOC-type ad — niddah — it’s perfect for camping! (shot of two tents)

I didn’t really mean shut up. What you wrote felt really nice, and I didn’t know how to handle it (if I were a guy on south park, I could just throw up, but I’m not).

Sorry to make you jealous of my selfish lifestyle as a loner woodsman.

no worries, dude. I’ve got plenty of fish to fry here, and I certainly have no trouble being a loner on the shore. I do miss the woods, sometimes, but I know where to go to find them, when I want my fix. (oh, wait, you were probably just goofing. my detector malfunctions when I haven’t gone to bed when I should’ve.)
